Jayasri's Success Story

For Operations Manager Jayasri, snapscale Is a Fun Place to Work and Grow

When Jayasri showed up for her first day of work in website development and maintenance for snapscale in India, she was a bit taken aback.

"I went to the office expecting everything to be very serious," Jayasri said. "I thought someone would tell me what to do and show me how things work. Amy (Cohen, India's site director) said,'It's your first day. Just look around and see what everyone is doing. Get to know a few people.' I was very surprised, but I knew right away this would be a fun place to work."

In addition to making Jayasri's job fun, Amy also looked out for the well-being of the staff. For example, Jayasri had a night shift every Friday to receive training from a client but struggled with the hours.

"One night, I just couldn't stay awake," Jayasri recalls. "I reluctantly asked Amy if I could put my head down for 30 minutes. She said,'Yes, go take a quick nap and come back fresh.' I was so relieved, and it allowed me to be more productive."

One major adjustment for Jayasri, and a positive one, is the open-door policy at snapscale. She knew she could approach anyone in the company, from team leaders to senior management.

"They always tell us that if something is wrong, we should come talk to them," Jayasri said. "I've worked for other BPOs large and small, and this is very different. We can call anyone, and they'll call us to make sure we're okay."

Growing Together

When Jayasri started developing and maintaining websites, she was the only person doing it. When the team grew, she became team leader. Amy was always asking Jayasri if she wanted to learn something new. When Jayasri started handling responsibilities of an operations manager, David Justus, snapscale VP of Operations, suggested that she add the designation.

Once Jayasri was named operations manager in India and team leader for one of snapscale's biggest technology campaigns, she needed help from management.

"I'm a very technical person," Jayasri said. "I enjoy coding and algorithms. David suggested books that would help me deal with people more effectively, and what to say and not to say to clients. We had discussions about how he was handling the Philippines and how I was handling India. I reached a place where I felt comfortable with managing our teams, not just technically. I'm able to think through a process from a business perspective. David and Mike (Yablonowitz, snapscale President) have helped me reach this level, functionally, and mentally."

Jayasri was excited to move into her current role because she's not constantly looking to jump ship for the next opportunity. She would much rather establish roots and is thrilled that snapscale is looking for the same thing.

"David and Mike always say they want me to grow with the company - not just technically but as a human being. For example, if something goes wrong, they don't show anger or frustration. They talk to us and find out why it happened, and we figure out how to make sure it doesn't happen again. I've learned to handle things the same way as operations manager. It can be tough but it benefits the team. People sometimes ask how I can be so calm, and that's why."

Jayasri has worked for BPOs that hire inexperienced people so they can be paid less. Once they get a few years of experience, they're often replaced with inexperienced people who will do the same job for less money. That's not the culture she has experienced at snapscale.

"Culture is not sustainable when you hire people for two years at time," Jayasri said. "At snapscale, we're told,'We want people who will sustain with us.' They want people to grow with the company."

Flexibility to Have Some Fun

The one constant since Jayasri's first day with snapscale has been an enjoyable work environment. After being named operations manager, she was a little sad that she wouldn't be doing the technical work that she loved. So she said something to David.

"I love working tech," Jayasri said. "That's where my heart is, but that's not what managers do. Now, they've decided to let me do some tech work, only because it makes me happy. It's another reason why I love coming to work."

Jayasri also loves to travel and go trekking in the mountains twice a year around the holidays. She didn't have to give up these trips when she started working for snapscale.

"When I come back to work, everyone is so excited to see pictures and hear stories," Jayasri said. "People here are interested in me not just as an employee, but as a person. They respect what I do outside of work. Their support in and out of the office means so much to me."
